Gilt Type 6
Explorer 1016 — Gilt Type 6
The last and most common gilt 1016: open chapter, high-set “Swiss T<25”, a coronet with tapering points and prominent pearls, and slanted serifs on the “E” of Rolex. Often seen turned brown (“tropical”).
Serials run from about 516,xxx (1959) into the R and L letter series of 1987–1989. Dial types were not strictly sequential: some matte dials reappear late in the run.
