Gilt Type 5
Explorer 1016 — Gilt Type 5
1964–1965
Short-lived open-chapter gilt dial with “Swiss T<25” set higher, replacing the top third of the three hashes at six. Told from Type 6 by a coronet with straight, non-tapering points and right-angled serifs on the “E” of Rolex; its almost handwritten print once raised reprint suspicions.
Serials run from about 516,xxx (1959) into the R and L letter series of 1987–1989. Dial types were not strictly sequential: some matte dials reappear late in the run.
