Gilt Type 1
Explorer 1016 — Gilt Type 1
1960–1962
First “Superlative Chronometer” dial: chapter ring, plain “Swiss” at six, no exclamation point or underline. The tell is a short, simple coronet with a plain base. Ian Fleming’s 1960-case 1016 is of this type.
Serials run from about 516,xxx (1959) into the R and L letter series of 1987–1989. Dial types were not strictly sequential: some matte dials reappear late in the run.
