Royal Oak Jumbo 5402 — 5402ST A-Series
Caseback small number A1–A1999. Original dial: AP monogram at 6, “SWISS” alone below the 6 o’clock marker, half-length minute lines beside the date window and flattened, wide-rimmed hands found only on the 5402. Early bracelets carry Gay Frères clasps (A26 stamped “1–72”; A2 stamped “1.72”).
1,937 sold: 490 (1972), 543 (1973), 614 (1974), 243 (1975), then stragglers to 1989. AP’s dating table puts A1–A500 at 1972–73, A500–A1000 at 1972–74, A1000–A1500 at 1973–75 and A1500–A2000 at 1974–76. Up to A100, even numbers went mostly to the Italian agent and odd numbers to the Swiss agent. Dated examples: A2 (1972), A26 delivered 16 June 1972, A88 (first quarter 1972), A284, A1254 (1973).

Date version of the 2120, introduced in October 1970 in model 5381 and chosen for the first Royal Oak in 1972; at the time the thinnest automatic with central rotor and date. Ébauche from LeCoultre & Cie until about 2002, then made by AP; replaced by the 7121 in 2022.
